The building of rail line next to the Cheasapeak and Ohio Canal was along with flooding and financial matters part of the end of the canal.', 'A CSX freight train heading west out of Brunswick.', 'The Potomac River parallels the C and O Canal.  A number of adventure companies offer tubing trips on the river.  The river is nearly always visible from the canal tow path.', 'More of the people tubing.  Note the person with a separate tube for their lunch.', 'Near Appomatox creek there is slack water (lack of rapids) on the river.  This public boat ramp gives people a place to launch their boats into that area.  I was standing on the canal tow path. ', 'The Appalachian Trail runs on the canal tow path for a few miles starting at the Potomac River bridge at Harpers Ferry and running east/south. The white blaze on the short post is an Applachian Trail marker.', 'This section of the canal just east of Harpers Ferry is dry due to damage caused by floods breaking the wall of the canal but it also shows another problem the canal had the railroad. The CSX line runs along right next to the canal where the telephone poles are.  The tracks aren\'t visible from this angle.', 'This is the first glimpse one gets of Harpers Ferry.  Harpers Ferry is on the W.V. side of the Potomac.  The canal is on the Maryland side.  Harpers Ferry was the scene of John Browns raid on the federal arsenal in his hope of starting a slave rebellion in the south.', 'This is a CSX train stopped on the Maryland end of the Potomac River bridge at Harpers Ferry.  ', 'The steps with the pedestrians on them lead across a walkway that takes one over the river to the National Park Service area of Harpers Ferry.  The train was waiting for an Amtrak passenger train to clear the next block so it could safely proceed.', 'The Amtrak train this fellow was waiting for was either very late or he was very early.  Either way he the Engineer was a friendly sort and visited with the tourists, including me, while waithing his turn to pass through the tunnel.', 'When my turn came to chat up the Engineer I teased him that I was making better time on my bike than he was with his train.  He agreed and added that he was roasting in the cab of his engine.  It was a HOT day.', 'The town of Harpers Ferry doesn\'t show well in this photo but its on the other end of the bridge.  You can see the pedestrian walkway that follows the tracks across the Potomac River to the town historic area.', 'Pedestrians on the Potomac River railroad bridge at Harpers Ferry.  The bridge shakes when trains move on their part of the bridge... scary.', 'Looking up from the tow path of the canal  this shows the train tunnel on the Maryland side near Harpers Ferry.  Before the tunnel was built in 1931 the trains went around this little mountain.  The C and O Canal is right under the bridges just ahead of where I\'m standing.', 'Looking from the historic district of Harpers Ferry W.V. back toward the Maryland side of the river and the C and O Canal.', 'Under the bridge is one of the many locks on the canal.  The white house was once a lock keepers house.  The little tunnel was by pass for excess water to keep the canal from flooding.  The various bypasses and other safety features were never able to safeguard the canal against floods.  The Potomac can really flood and the floods almost always did serious damage and still do.' );
